YuGiOh - Egyptian God Cards

Updated on May 19, 2012

YuGiOh! Card Guide - The Egyptian God Cards

Welcome to our guide page to the YuGiOh! Egyptian God Cards. On this page, you'll find an introduction to the Egyptian God cards - both in the anime and real-life, card images, buying guides and plenty more besides. Don't forget to vote in our Egyptian God Card poll, and to say 'hello' on our guest book too.

In the YuGiOh! anime, the Egyptian God cards were first introduced in the second series (Battle City). Originally created by Pegasus, based on the the three divine beasts - Slifer the Sky Dragon, Obelisk the Tormentor and The Winged Dragon of Ra - shown on the tablets depicting the Pharaoh's story; when he realised their power, Pegasus had Ishizu Ishtar bury them in the Pharaoh's tomb. From there, they find themselves one each in the hands of Yugi, Kaiba and Marik and are central to the plot of the series, with Marik believing he can conquer the world if he possesses all three.

Central to the plot of the Battle City Story Arc, the three Egyptian God cards are Slifer the Sky Dragon, Obelisk the Tormentor and The Winged Dragon of Ra

The Original English-Language Egyptian God Cards in Real Life

The first English-Language release of the Egyptian God Cards came as promotional cards in the Worldwide Edition of YuGiOh! Duel Monsters console game for the Gameboy Advance. With different coloured backs, the three god cards - The Winged Dragon of Ra, Slifer the Sky Dragon and Obelisk the Tormentor - stood out from every other card ever produced. This edition of the god cards has never been tournament legal, firstly because of the different coloured backs, and secondly because of the incomplete list of effects given on the cards (which constantly change in the anime in any case).

Despite this, they became incredibly sought after and within a year of the game's release, they were changing hands for large sums of cash. Inevitably, this led them to becoming a target for counterfeiters, and the market was flooded with fake version, ranging from very poor quality copies to versions that were extremely hard to tell from the originals.

In 2010, these original Egyptian God Cards were rereleased as part of the tenth anniversary Legendary Collection - this is now the easiest way to be sure of getting legitimate copies of the God Cards. They remain non-tournament legal. However, there has now been tournament legal versions of Obelisk the Tormentor and Slifer the Sky Dragon (with normal backs and complete effect texts - see below) and no doubt a legal version of The Winged Dragon of Ra will follow at some stage.

As we mentioned above, this is the easiest and cheapest way to grab copies of the original Egyptian God Cards, but remember that they aren't for use in tournaments...
